Digital Access in the Classroom

The use of technology can be the bridge that closes the educational gap for students in disadvantaged schools.  To ensure equity for all learners, plans must be in place for equal access.  Many school systems do not have the luxury to provide all students with individual technology equipment, therefore teachers must ensure that all students have equal access in the classroom.  Ensuring equitable digital access in the classroom can be a challenge, but with the following tools students can have a technologically rich environment for all learners.

  • Teachers must always be mindful of student’s individual needs and abilities while planning technology based assignments.
  • Teachers can assign weekly rotations through technology centers, completing online activities.
  • Students can work in groups fulfilling various interchangeable roles to ensure all get equal use of multiple devices. (ex. photographer, data collection, presenter)
  • If homework assignments or projects are to be completed away from school, technology needs to be available for check out with parent permission.
  • Students can check out technology within the classroom for their use.
